Cannot do something for toffee

Ещё эту же идиому можно повстречать в форме not to be able to [verb] for toffee. Смысл один: не могу сделать, хоть убей. Ириска toffee здесь, по всей вероятности, выступает неким призом, поскольку полная фраза, говорят, первоначально была could not shoot for toffee, cigars, cocoa-nuts, or anything else.

В современных контекстах это выражение может выглядеть так:

Oh, you'll definitely beat Sarah for that role in the musical—she's can't sing for toffee.

I tried to fix the car myself, but I can't do it for toffee.

She attempted to play tennis, but she can't do it for toffee. She can't even hit the ball.

Появление идиомы Cannot do something for toffee приписывается концу XIX века. Так в журнале Athletic Notes за 19 ноября 1886 года читаем:

Concurrent with the first eleven’s victory, the second eleven were administering a severe drubbing to Kilnhurst Church, and this success should impart courage into the ranks, and tend to the reputation of the allegation that the “youngsters can’t play for toffee.”
